Happy Sunday everyone! :) I hope your weekend has been a good one; there seems to be so much tragedy around the world at the moment…  I hope that you are all safe and well.

Tonight I’d like to share with you one of my favourite self help books – Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life – which is written by an American psychologist, Dr Steven Hayes. I first heard about it a few years ago but only bought a copy in 2012. Yep I was a bit slow and was missing out!  It is a fabulous collection of creative strategies that you can use to move past unhelpful and unproductive thinking – e.g. excessive worry or persistent negative self talk, among other things.

These strategies are all based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT – pronounced “act” like an “act” in a play – for short). My interpretation of this approach to self help and talkie therapy is that rather than trying to challenge or debate your thinking and getting stuck in that, you simply accept the thoughts as being there and look at ways to accept and move beyond them so that they take up less of your energy and time.

What I like best about Get Out of Your Mind… is that all the activities are explained in straightforward language so it is easy to follow and helps you get away from over thinking things. A lot of visualisation is involved too which really suits visual people like me!  Hayes also explains ACT in some detail in the beginning so you get a sound overview of what he is getting at in later sections. (He’s actually identified as one of the founders of this approach in Western Psychology so he, along with Dr Russ Harris who I’ve previously mentioned over here, are some of the best writers on this topic.)

Get Out of Your Mind… is available at bookdepository.com and is currently selling for $19.29 – bargain! :)

The importance of your thinking and how it can impact on your mood and perceptions of the world, others and yourself is also beautifully illustrated in this latest ad campaign by Dove. Dove’s Aussie PR let me know about the video last week and I shared it on the blog’s Facebook page; you may have seen it on other blogs too as it has a really great message! :)

It is part of their Real Beauty Sketches Campaign. Here it is:

(In case you are wondering, given I was talking about ACT earlier, to me this ad is not an example of an ACT approach per se, but rather a good example of a Cognitive Therapy strategy. It too can be a very powerful and effective approach as we can see in the video!)

Have you read any books like Get Out of Your Mind… before?

What do you think of Dove’s latest ad campaign?

Disclosure: I purchased the book I mention here with my own money. Views are 100% my own.
I have mentioned the Dove ad because I think it has a great message and was not compensated
in any way by Dove Australia’s PR for featuring it on the site or on my Facebook page.
